Using and Interpreting the Port Lewis Impression Pad

The only valid test of saddle fit is one that is conducted while the rider is aboard and the horse is moving. The impression pad is an easy to use tool that will show you how your saddle sits on your horse’s back, and will reveal any areas of imbalance or high pressure. It is extremely easy to use, and takes less than 30 minutes to get results!

How do we read and interpret the pad?

When you place the pad on your horse’s back, it will be evenly filled with the red “equi-dough”. As you ride, your saddle will slowly sink down into the impression pad, which will retain an impression of the pressure. The equi-dough will get thinner under pressure; when you remove the pad and photograph it, some areas of the pad will be dark, indicating little or no pressure, and other areas will be lighter, indicating higher pressure, or even clear, indicating extreme pressure.

Once you finish your riding test and submit a photograph of the pad, you’ll receive an analysis of your results.
